Owner Biography

Peggy Kuchenbrod has been learning the art of fine southern home cooking since she was young. Family and friends schooled her with a pinch of this and a dash of that to make mouth watering meals. Peggy has continually expanded and perfected her home cooking skills. The numerous homemade specialties include the 12 ounce “Newland Burger”, ham and cabbage, chicken salad, mashed potatoes, barbecue sauce and hush puppies. Breakfast favorites include Belgian waffles and real sausage links. Homemade cakes include the nine layer chocolate cake, pineapple coconut cake, and coconut cream cake. Soda fountain style milkshakes and soft serve ice cream will help you reminisce about the “good ole days”.

- Childhood Favorite
I grew up in Gates County....in fact, "Miss Peggy" was my babysitter!!! Her food has always been and will always be amazing, plain and simple. I now live in Washington state, and whenever I start craving good, wholesome, country cooking, it's always Peggy's that I think of.

- Down home cooking done right!
I love this place! I visited yesterday, on my way home from the outer banks. The food was sooooo good and our waitress, Tori, was just the sweetest thing. She was helpful, kind, and played with my baby. (most people in the food service industry cringe when you walk in with an infant!) if you like delicious southern cooking you will love this place. My parents drive all the way from prince George va to eat there sometimes! I'm so glad they convinced me to go this time. I felt like I was in that movie "fried green tomatoes" it was just so southern and so good! Can't wait to go back. Thanks for a great experience!

If you enjoy country cooking and friendly people, then you need to visit Peggy's Country Cafe. Peggy makes you feel like one of the family. The staff is very friendly and the food is like grandma's cooking. Do yourself a favor and go see Peggy to enjoy a wonderful meal. Try her cornbread.

- Quaint and Yummy
We came across Peggy's while exploring trails along the Dismal Swamp. A cute, little cafe, Peggy's had a nice menu of burgers, sandwiches, and fresh seafood. My brother ordered the frog legs which were as big as a chicken drumstick and came with a large serving of fresh coleslaw, fries, and giant hushpuppies. I had a loaded cheeseburger with onion rings and one of my favorites, corn nuggets. Our server was sweet and served everything fresh and warm. The prices were very reasonable. If we're ever in the area again, we'll be sure to visit again!
